A large deciduous tree native to North America, prized for its stately appearance, vibrant fall foliage, and valuable timber. It typically grows to heights of 60 to 100 feet, with a spread of 40 to 50 feet, forming a broad, rounded crown with sturdy branches. The leaves are simple, alternate, and deeply lobed with pointed tips, turning from glossy green to shades of red, orange, and brown in the fall, creating a spectacular autumn display. Shumard oak produces acorns that are an important food source for wildlife, including squirrels, deer, and birds. This adaptable tree thrives in a variety of soil types, including clay and loam, and is tolerant of urban environments and air pollution. Shumard oak is commonly used in landscaping and reforestation projects due to its resilience, attractive foliage, and ecological value.
